Third, for performances and recitals, memorization is often expected. More importantly, it eliminates the anxiety of page turns and the possibility of losing your place on the page. When you know how to memorize piano pieces securely, you’re prepared for anything.
That said, I never force beginners to memorize. For students just learning how to read sheet music, keeping their eyes on the page reinforces reading skills. Timing matters.

For advanced players: Memorization becomes more efficient as pattern recognition improves. You’ve internalized so many musical structures that new pieces often contain familiar elements. Advanced players can often memorize significant portions of a piece while learning it initially, rather than memorizing as a separate step.
At this level, analytical memory typically leads the process, with other memory types reinforcing it. Advanced students should maintain a substantial repertoire of 15-30 pieces and develop the ability to memorize complete movements or multi-movement works.
Regardless of level, the fundamental principle remains: layer multiple memory types for security. A beginner using three memory pathways for a simple piece has more reliable memorization than an advanced player using only muscle memory for a complex work.
